Despite saying I wouldn't rush into danger until I am more competent at defending myself, when I came across the village of Aleswell, that Malene had told me was deserted, I had to find out what was going on.  I soon spotted a rake floating in the air tending to the pumpkin patch.  When I had a closer look a voice told me to speak with someone in the inn.  I did and I found out an illusionist had turned everyone in town invisible.  They asked me to persuade him to fix the problem and, despite my promise to myself, I did my best to.  They pointed me in the direction of a nearby fort but inside I found only evil conjurers.  I fled outside and an unseen force slew the conjured monsters.  He then told me how to reverse the invisibility.  Now I have a free bed in the Aleswell inn whenever I need it.
